Synopsis

After eight long years, Evadne will finally be reunited with her older sister, Halcyon, who has been proudly serving in the queen’s army. But when Halcyon appears earlier than expected, Eva knows something has gone terribly wrong. Halcyon is on the run, hunted by her commander and charged with murder.

Though Halcyon’s life is spared during her trial, the punishment is heavy. And when Eva volunteers to serve part of Halcyon’s sentence, she’s determined to find out exactly what happened. But as Eva begins her sentence, she quickly learns that there are fates much worse than death.

My Review

This is a beautiful story about 2 sisters in a stunning world with a fantastic magic system.

I adore sister stories. Evadne and Halcyon are two very different characters which made following them so much more interesting. As much as I did enjoy following the sisters, I didn’t fully connect with them. Characters are usually my favourite part of every story however the world of this story attracted me more than the characters did. Evadne is the smart, intelligent sister where Halcyon is the strong, warrior sister. I enjoyed the moments where their adventures allowed for more depth to their characters and allowed them to stray from the expectation of their character stereotypes. Evadne ended up surprising me a lot throughout the story and I really enjoyed following her story arc. Both sisters have great character arcs and they are developed thoroughly as realistic and rounded characters.

The magic system is my favourite thing about this story. It is unique, beautiful and really made the entire story enjoyable. Stand-alones often fall short for me because the story doesn’t feel fully fleshed out and I feel like the world building doesn’t live up to its potential. The story was an adventure story with a lot of mini sub-plots. Although it was exciting and generally fun to read, the climax was not surprising and the story didn’t offer a lot of surprises or plot twists.

All around this was a fun and enjoyable story. Even though I wasn’t fully invested in the characters, that does not subtract from the story itself. It’s beautifully written and had a lovely atmosphere. There was excitement, drama and a touch of romance. It had everything I look forward to in a story.

Happy Reading !
