My Rating: 3.75 / 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Genre: Sci-Fi, Young Adult, Fantasy, Dystopia
The year is 2172. Climate change and nuclear disasters have rendered much of earth unliveable. Only the lucky ones have escaped to space colonies in the sky.
In a war-torn Nigeria, battles are fought using flying, deadly mechs and soldiers are outfitted with bionic limbs and artificial organs meant to protect them from the harsh, radiation-heavy climate. Across the nation, as the years-long civil war wages on, survival becomes the only way of life.
Two sisters, Onyii and Ify, dream of more. Their lives have been marked by violence and political unrest. Still, they dream of peace, of hope, of a future together.
And they’re willing to fight an entire war to get there.
I received a sneak preview of the first few chapters. The first thing I noticed was the interesting world building and great character introductions.
We meet both Onyii and Ify in a refugee camp hiding from the war raging through their country. I loved reading from both their perspectives. The characters are unique and through the small bit that I did read, they all have distinct traits that make them stand out among the rest.
This futuristic dystopian world was fascinating to learn about. The world building was seamlessly introduced through the characters history and perfectly opened the story with stunning and sometimes disturbing images of what this world is.
Onyii is strong and determined. She’s a fighter willing to do anything to make sure her sister is safe. And Ify is young, very clever and a little rebellious. I really love Ify’s relationship with the droid, Enyemaka, who basically raised her.
I might not have read much of the book, but the feminist theme already came through. I love the characters and the chapters that I got ended with a bang. That cliff-hanger got me hooked!
Happy Reading !
