Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

My Review

The start of this story is completely hilarious. We have Harper – an average teenage girl who is unexpectedly whisked away to another world where magic and curses and monsters are real. This book shows us the most realistic and hilarious situations that would arise from this scenario.

Other than the hilarious moments of this book – it is also extremely exciting, and well written. The plot is quick moving and really fun. The book builds so perfectly towards the thrilling ending that I was constantly reading ahead and skipping sentences because I NEEDED to get to the next page and the next chapter. (I, of course, had to force myself to slow down and reread the sentences I kept skipping but it just proves the edge-sitting, nail-biting excitement that this book was so full of.)

Of course, this is a Beauty and the Beast retelling but that did not subtract from the plot twists and surprises that were lurking in between the pages of this book. Kemmerer gives us a fresh and interesting spin on the original story.

Harper is an interesting character. She is very strong and independent and I just adore her badass warrior princess vibe. Her reaction to everything is very realistic and as she grows used to being in Emberfall – we see her grow stronger and more confident. The other two characters – Prince Rhen and Grey both have interesting character arcs by the end of the first book but we are left with so many unanswered questions and so much more excitement to look forward to in the rest of this trilogy.

This book was brilliantly written and truly an enjoyable experience. I can’t wait for the release of the second book in the series in Jan 2020.

Happy Reading !
